about

I am a fourth generation New Zealander. This collection is a musical painting of my father's family history. On 22nd June 1841 the "Oriental" set sail for New Zealand, pausing briefly to pick up passengers at Plymouth. Among the emigrants were many of my forebears who would go on to settle the beautiful region of Taranaki, a lush landscape dominated by a majestic snow capped mountain, and steeped in Maori legend. My Cornish great-grandfather would later put down roots in Taranaki (via South Australia) as a military settler, and in 1881 the Hine family would leave everything they had known in Staffordshire and journey to this new land. I have chosen or written a song which best describes their experience. This is for all of them.
