Following the death of his father in Truro, South Australia, William Luke joined the military which took him to Taranaki, New Zealand. After marrying Ellen Sole he became a dairy farmer. Despite being an experienced settler he went one day to the back of the farm and was tragically killed by a falling branch. The song is told from Ellen's perspective.
